As carbon hotspots vary from industry to industry, a weighting factor applies across four of the five CATI activity areas: Measurement & Disclosure (15%; Indicator 2.3.1 (6%) does not apply), Carbon Targets Setting (14%), Performance against Carbon Targets (12%) and Climate Action (43%). In 2015, Apple started engaging directly with suppliers to find ways to reduce their energy use. Apple aims to promote continual improvement, build technical capabilities, and increase awareness of the environmental and financial benefits of energy efficiency.
In 2016, Apple increased efforts to reduce and ultimately eliminate manufacturing waste sent to landfills by expanding its UL Zero Waste to Landfill validation program to all final assembly sites in China. The program is the first comprehensive standard for waste conversion and calculation, with a focus on waste stream management compliance, inspection and auditing.
