2026Based on five years of large-scale public data gathered through Blue Map’s “Snapshot” (Suishoupai) feature, which enables users to take photos to identify and document waste sorting practices in their communities, this report provides a quantitative assessment of waste sorting performance in 104 prefecture-level and above cities across China. The findings show that, with accelerated progress during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s municipal waste sorting has advanced from pilot exploration to more systematic development. Leading cities such as Suzhou and Shanghai have established world-class sorting systems, though challenges such as uneven regional progress and difficulties in recycling low-value recyclables remain.
