       随着社会经济高速的发展，废料和生活垃圾的日渐增多，地球有限的自净能力己难以承受日渐沉重的压力。1987年，澳洲人伊恩基南驾单人帆船环绕地球时，看到漂浮在海上的垃圾，深深觉得要做一些事改变这种状况。回到悉尼后，他在朋友的帮助下发起了“清洁悉尼港日”。后来，伊恩得到联合国环境规划署支持，“世界清洁地球日”Clean Up the World Weekend (CUW Weekend)活动在1993年第一次举办。世界清洁地球日现在是全球最重要的环境保护活动之一，每年全世界有超过125个国家、4000万人参加这个活动。世界清洁地球日旨在号召全世界人民自觉行动起来，从自己做起、从眼前做起，不乱扔杂物、不污染环境，自觉清理各种废弃物，转变生产生活方式，低碳生活、绿色出行。
