What is Carbon Accounting?

Carbon Accounting is the process to quantify the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted by corporations. As majority of GHGs are measured as carbon dioxide in this process, we simply call it “Carbon Accounting”.

How to conduct Carbon Accounting?

Carbon accounting for corporations is a process to calculate the amount of carbon emissions within the corporation boundaries in a certain period, based on relevant standards or guidelines. Carbon accounting could help with understanding corporations’ carbon emission status, setting emission reduction targets, carrying out emission reduction actions and responding to carbon disclosure requirements. GHG emissions at corporation level are categorized by scope and distinguished according to the source of the emissions: Scope 1 direct emissions, Scope 2 indirect energy emissions and Scope 3 all other indirect emissions.

To help corporations and organizations carry on carbon accounting processes with high efficiency at a lower cost, Corporate GHG Emissions Accounting Platform was developed based on Guidelines on GHG Accounting Methods and Reporting for industry companies. Through inserting accounting equations and emission factors for 24 industries, this platform could support corporations to start carbon accounting both within organizational boundary and including their value chain, also with additional functions like automatic cross check and data quality level.

What is Product Carbon Footprint?

Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) indicates the total GHG emissions generated by a product, which includes emissions in material acquisition and pre-processing, production, distribution and storage, use and end-of-life. PCF is measured by carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e).

How to measure Product Carbon Footprint?

Based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the primary methods for calculating product carbon footprint include GHG Protocol, PAS 2050 and ISO 14067. The system boundary commonly used includes: cradle to gate (from raw material acquisition to product delivery) and cradle to grave (from raw material acquisition to final product disposal).

To guide the enterprises to identify the emission hotspots along its product life cycle and reduce greenhouse emissions, the "Product Carbon Footprint Accounting Platform" has built-in GHG emission factors originating in China for the whole life cycle of products. This will increase the efficiency and effectiveness for enterprises and consumers to calculate GHG emissions of each product in each life cycle stage.

What are “science-based targets”?

Science-based targets provide a clearly-defined pathway for companies to reduce GHG emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. Targets are considered “science-based” if they are in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement – limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

How to set a carbon target?

“Company Carbon Target Setting Tool” generates options for enterprise to set emission reduction targets based on SBTi methodology. It could empower mid and small-sized enterprises set appropriate science-based emission reduction targets (align with 1.5°C, well-below 2°C and 2°C pathway). By simply inputting base year emission data, combined with industry, region, policy requirements, etc., this tool could help enterprise easily set their Scope 1+2 and Scope 3 emission reduction targets.

Snapshot lightens up neighborhood garbage sorting.

To help promote the establishment of waste separation systems in 46 key cities, in May 2020, IPE and Vanke Foundation jointly developed a waste map and, under the guidance of the China Forum of Environmental Journalists launched the "Snapshot Lightens Up Neighborhood Garbage Sorting" campaign. The campaign encourages the public to research, upload and identify the garbage sorting situation in their neighborhoods through the App's garbage sorting function, hoping to promote the active participation of urban residents in garbage sorting, reduction and recycling through data crowdsourcing and citizen participation, and to build a better home with blue sky, green land and clear water!

Biodiversity Snapshot

Biodiversity is the basis for human survival and development, the bloodline and foundation of the Earth's living community. With population growth and the expansion of human economic activities, global biodiversity is facing serious threats, and the conservation of biodiversity requires government and professional organizations to carry out, as well as extensive public participation. In 2021, IPE launched "The "Environmental Protection at Your Fingertips - Biodiversity Snapshot Campaign" under the guidance of the China Forum of Environmental Journalists. The campaign encourages netizens to submit pictures of species through Blue Map, introducing AI recognition function to help users easily identify the species photographed, while overlaying environmental, meteorological and geographical information to form a crowdsourced record of species distribution. We hope to see more partners joining the campaign to map the distribution of species in China!

Plastic Reduction Campaign

Promoting plastic circularity and controlling plastic pollution require multi-stakeholder participation. The public, more than a mere "consumer", are observers of how plastics pollution control policies are implemented when they purchase, use and dispose plastic objects. Since June 2022, with support from institutions such as China Environmental Protection Association and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), IPE developed the "Plastic Recycling Map". IPE also launched the activity “Low-carbon traveler for a Beautiful China” with partner organizations and the guidance from China Forum of Environmental Journalists. The public are invited to take pictures of their own toiletries and record if the hotels provide disposable toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, slippers, comb. Data analysis and case studies will then be conducted to promote hotels across China to implement plastics reduction policies, and contribute to achieving “Dual Carbon” targets and the construction of a Beautiful China.

Carbon Footprint Snapshot

With the promotion of the "Dual Carbon" goal, the concept and regulations of low carbon development are receiving more attention. However, people are often unaware of the embedded carbon emissions in clothing, food, housing and transportation, as well as how to identify low carbon products and judge the effectiveness of low carbon behavior. Based on the "China Products Carbon Footprint Factors Database", IPE and its partner Carbon Talk developed the Product Carbon Scan on the Blue Map APP. It allows users to calculate the carbon emissions after taking photos or selecting an object, learn about the product carbon footprint, make green consumption choices and contribute to carbon reduction and carbon neutrality!

We all contribute to the making of a beautiful China. In 2017, Blue Map launched the "Share" function, which allows users to upload pictures of blue sky, rivers, pollution, people and nature, record and provide visual data for the change of air quality in the city. Different watermarks can be selected on each photo containing: air AQI indices, Environmental Protection at Your Fingertip, temperature, humidity, etc. In 2018, Blue Map and the China Environmental Journalists Association launched the "Environmental Protection at Your Fingertips" campaign, which advocates taking photos of beautiful China, showcasing the achievements of ecological civilization construction, and superimposing air watermarks to call for more citizens to protect the blue skies.

Climate Action Checklist

Climate change mitigation and adaptation requires everyone’s participation and contribution. Saving one kilowatt-hour of electricity, refusing to use one set of disposable tableware help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To enable the public to learn about climate change and join in climate actions, IPE jointly launched the "Climate Action" with WildAid on the Blue Map APP. In June 2024, with the guidance from China Forum of Environmental Journalists, IPE launched activity “Climate Action for a Beautiful China” with Haidian and Chaoyang District Bureau of Ecology and Environment. It aims to motivate the public to make their contribution to building a beautiful China by making concrete climate actions in daily lives.
