Research on the Carbon Emission Reduction Potential of Community Household Waste Sorting: A Case Study of Banbidian Village, Xingshou Town, Changping District, Beijing

In 2024, with the support of the Vanke Foundation, IPE explored carbon accounting methods for community-level waste sorting and treatment, building on research into urban-level greenhouse gas emission accounting methodologies. We found that household waste sorting can reduce carbon emissions through source reduction and resource recycling. We believe that improving relevant methodologies to account for carbon emission reductions from waste sorting can help promote voluntary carbon trading, thereby realizing economic value.

2023 Annual Report on Garbage Sorting Index of 102 Cities

The evaluation results show that leading cities continue to maintain high standards in waste sorting, with Suzhou and Shanghai scoring far ahead. Their standardized systems, based on the "14th Five-Year Plan" for the Development of Urban Domestic Waste Classification and Treatment Facilities, have withstood the test of time and are in stable operation. Several cities, having established waste sorting and disposal systems, have achieved basic waste sorting goals through secondary sorting. Among them, Beijing stands out as a representative, ranking third nationwide in total score.

Garbage Sorting Index Evaluation Report 2022

The 2022 Garbage Sorting Index evaluation covered a total of 100 cities. The average score is only 15.07, with more than half of the cities scoring below 10, indicating that garbage sorting is still at a low level. The evaluation shows that the three key measures required by the 14th Five-Year Period Urban Domestic Waste Separation and Disposal Facilities Development Plan, namely "removing bins and building stations, regular drop-off, and supervision and guidance", have not yet been effectively implemented in most cities. There remains a lack of capability in food waste treatment yet at the same time, there is more capacity than the amount of food waste treatable. Garbage incineration capacity has shown signs of surplus in many regions.

2021 Garbage Soring Index (GSI) Report

The Garbage Sorting Index (GSI) was designed by IPE based on the Snapshot questionnaire to quantify the actual situation of waste sorting in cities, districts (cities) and residential communities at the prefecture level and above in four dimensions: performance of community garbage sorting, community garbage sorting management measures, garbage sorting and transportation, and urban domestic garbage management system. This report uses the Snapshot data as of October 31, 2021 to calculate the community Garbage Sorting Index in the main urban areas of 22 key cities. The evaluation results show that the Yangtze River Delta is the overall leader, following Shanghai's first implementation of garbage classification in China, Suzhou City has built a proven management model and is far ahead with a total score of 86.2, and Nanjing City also ranks third with a score of 52.6; ranking second and fourth are Shenzhen (53.5 points) and Beijing (37.9 points).
